Stopped by the "good" B&M today. Nobody else around. Sitting on the counter were the items that had just come in:

Old red seal $2 bill in nice Unc condition.
1921 Morgan. VF.
A flip with four 1945 2 pesos
1901 $10 eagle
1915 $10 eagle

I don't collect currency. Nobody in the world needs a '21 Morgan. Ever. I love the 2 pesos but don't need them.

The 1901 eagle was VF. Uncleaned, no hairlines, but ohmygod it's dull.

But the 1915.

XF-AU at least. Nice surfaces. Nice color with just a touch of peach here and there.

Looked closer. No big dings. Nice rims and edge. Not ex-jewelry. No hairlines. Not cleaned.

How much?

$20 over melt.

Ran to the ATM. Came back, counted out the cash.

Then I heard HLT's voice in my head "You'll shoot your eye out! You'll shoot your eye out!" Laughing at me. Goading me.

Grab the red book next to the counter. Ax if I can use their scale. Spot on at 16.7 grams.

Then I remember they've got a Sigma. Can I give it a test?

Sure!!

Cycle through the initiation mode. Go to "90% gold, balance copper" and... it falls outside of the range.
Test it again, and again. Flip it upside down. Outside of the range.

Reset the device to "91.7% 22k balance copper". That's "crown gold", the standard for sovereigns. Smack dab in the middle of the acceptable range.

Pick up the 1875-ish $20 liberty he's got in one of those weird plastic photocerts I mentioned earlier. Set it back to 90% gold, balance copper. Smack dab in the middle of the range. Try the $10 eagle again. Outside of the range.

The price he was asking was really, really good for a pretty XF++ $10 Indian. Frankly it was a good price for just raw gold bullion. But the risk of getting stuck with smoething I couldn't sell (and this would have been a flip) was just too high.

So I walked with nothing.

Rarely have left a local coin shop without a purchase.

I would have taken the 21 Morgan.

Big fan of 21 peaces.

I just went through about a dozen classic gold pieces on my Sigma. Every single one of them showed up in the exact same spot on the acceptable range for 90% balance copper.

My fake $10 Indian reads the exact same as the one at the B&M: Outside of the 90% range entirely, within the 91.7% range.

Different coins, different sigma testers. And it's a pretty sophisticated machine what needs to be recalibrated periodically. But I'm even more certain now it's a fake.

The dealer was adamant, though. "I know the source. They've been coming here for years." I don't doubt it. And like I said: It's actually higher gold content than the real ones. About .25 of a gram, if my thumbnail math isn't too far off. That's not nothing--about $10.

Still doesn't make it real. :(

In the process.
Signing lease next month.
I'm so excited.
I bet it will be fun meeting coin collectors.
I'm gonna have a bid board to bring in the fun people.
Stock every album there is.
Stop by.
We'll chat.
Yay.

Every day I walk into the B&Ms and gold buyers, I thank god I don't own a coin shop.

One B&M in town has floor to ceiling racks, filled with bins. The bins are filled with...proof sets. I bet there are 5,000 to 10,000 proof sets.

The other gets a constant flow of certified rolls of golden dollars, gold leaf bindered collections of "America's Statehood Quarters", each with certificates of authenticity and limited to 50,000, and every other kind of home shopping channel dreck you can imagine.

And the phone calls from people who just don't have any idea about how this works. Not just coins, but simple economics. Scarcity. Supply and demand. To have to explain in absolute idiot terms that a wheat penny isn't worth $100 because your uncle told you it was and then have people scream at you because you're trying to steal from them.

I'll keep doing what I do: Shopping to find that one item that I think is cool, and hope to find that one other person who agrees.

The shop well stocked with proof sets is owned by a dumkopf.

I had only enough proof sets to make the shipping worthwhile.

While it's true that a shop can close up with unsold inventory and not be taxed since there were no "sales" I found it more useful to close up with scads of bullion. :D
