Apparently tucked into that pile of older early protoslab gold that was at that B&M were a couple of gold type sets (Capital holders "Coins of the Gold Rush").

In one of them was an 1843-O $2.5

Nice original color, maybe XF-AU, with a few really neat die breaks and chips.

It was in another counter hawk's pile, just being tallied up by the owner.

It wasn't the holy grail. But it was a neat piece. :(

Not a particularly rare date but southern branch mint gold is sure neat. There were two varieties of this date---the small date is more common than the large date.

What's so neat about southern gold?

Just a neat piece to see mixed in with 1900 $20 libs. I don't know for sure, but I suspect it went for just a few bucks over melt.

Would have been a keeper :(

Very old and historic coin. Neatness is in the eye of the beholder.
