I finally broke down and set up a true water conditioning tank for my discus tank. To raise really quality fish you need to be able to do 50-75% water changes every other day. I have a heater/UV/circulator in it, new pumps and hoses for making the water changes, etc. I use a mix of about 33% RO and 67% tap. I like to get my conductivity down to around 350uS.

For my planted/Endler/shrimp tank I capture some RO reject and use that for water changes. They all love hard water.

Interesting. I picked up the Axelrod book recently and have been eyeing aquariums as I venture to Petsmart buy cat food.

Drowned with a salt tank in the early 70's.

Maybe a 29 freshwater.

Only get one as large as you are willing to do good solid water changes. I would avoid CL aquariums personally, unless they are in the process of being taken down by the owner. The tanks are cheap compared to ending up with a leaker that was in someone's garage.

My next tank will be a 5-7gal nano tank for shrimp.

I must be lucky. I've never gotten a used one that leaked.
I have bought new ones that leaked though.
My last 55 with stand was $100 on Craigslist.

I wouldnt even consider water changes without a venturi sink adaptor.

i have plenty of frogs that you can use to stock your aquarium with.

fortunately, my 40 gallon tank has 11-13 gallons of water in it.

So a water change involves nothing more complex than a five gallon bucket.

i would not want to do a 50% water change on a 75 gallon tank. jeez.

Easier than your bucket with the right equipment.

SECONDED!

My prize feeder GOLDFISH tank will be due for its thrice yearly filter wash in a month or so.

Lined wine barrel OUTSIDE with 4 fish.

190GPM biological pump filter.

They are happy.

But that filter wash takes a good 12 minutes or so out of my photography classes.

(usually, I siphon about 80% of the water out and change it.)

I have never added Burma Shave to the water.
