It's got that special smoething that I like. And it's gold.
I bid the high end and they outbid that.
Hope I do better on the other 4 pieces :(

There's a lot going on with that coin.
I like it more than I would have guessed.
I usually don't care for designs that cluttered on a coin.

First year of the series. Mintage of just 1,176. Of the 7 that NGC has graded PL, only one is higher (3 others tied @ 64).

And then there's this:

46.8071 grams of gold

Four Pounds---Bullion coins made in the 1950's by the Philadelphia Mint to pay for oil. There's also a one pound coin using the same dies. These are very heavily counterfeited so getting a slabbed coin makes a lot of sense.

I always liked those as they early on showed that other countries knew what there was to "count on" in the US political circus.

There were four of the Saudi pieces in the auction last night. All of them graded higher than this one. I figured the 58 would be overlooked against the others. But really, on an esoteric, bullion-based series like this, what difference does an MS61 grade make vs. AU58? And in the pictures at least it had the prettiest color and nice luster. Like Perry said, I wouldn't own (or wouldn't pay a premium for) one that wasn't slabbed. This one at 58 and slabbed means to me it was actually used, traded, lightly circulated. I think that's cool. Older slab, too, so I think that adds smoe legit to it.

I nuclear'd the $1800 - $2200 estimate with a bid of $2400 (that's $2880 with the juice!). In the end, it sold for just $1700. If I understand the weight, it's about an ounce of pure gold. So what's not to like at $1700 pre-juice and shipping :)

The 100 soles was estimated at $2000 - $3000. I bid $3k ($3600 with the juice). It closed at $2400. :D

It was well below my bid, and I'd missed two pieces by then, so I tossed a couple of live bids at a piece I hadn't bid on: the MS65 1969 100 soles. It was estimated at $2000 to $2500 but wasn't getting any play. Its mintage was just 540 pieces (still not the key, that was the 1958 at 101 (vs. the 1965 at 23,000!). I live bid it up to $1950. I thot I had it for a second, then it rocketed up to $2600. :(

But the two I'd bid on early and missed bummed me out. That coronation piece hadn't gotten any play at all, so I was thinking it'd be mine for sure. After I'd been beaten, I threw one last $100 bid at it. But in the end it sold for $2200 ($2640), on an estimated $1500 to $2000. These pieces are out there but they are rare. Most have been wiped. This at 63 looked every bit a 64 in the images.
They made an even larger one, maybe I'll go for that eventually. :(

And the 20 peso stings because I thot I bid high on it, too. Estimate was $1200-$1600. I bid $1700 a month ago and figured I owned it. But it closed at $2025--$2430 with the juice! That's like 30% above the high estimate. It's a short, popular series. But it's not the even the key. The 1920/10 was about half the mintage. But pop reports show this piece as one of 3 in 65 and only 2 higher in 66.
Oh well. You can't win if you don't play. One more piece closing in 3 days. I don't have high hopes.
