I was perusing NEN a few nights ago for the first time in ages, I think because of smoething Rollo or Renski posted, and came across your mom's face.

I mean this. I came across this.

It's a boring Sun-Yat Sen 1933 Chinese Republic dollar, commonly called the "junk" dollar because of the boat on the reverse. Mintage 46.4 Million.
Same size, weight, and purity as a US silver dollar--in fact the US struck 30 million of these bastards in 1949 back-dated to 1933.

So a common coin, not even Unc. Damaged even. But PCGS. And what type of damage?

NEN had it listed thusly:

Image

As you can see, NEN's description simply calls it "Chop mark." But they didn't have an image of the slab, and it doesn't specify that PCGS also called it chop marked--just AU details.

So I looked it up on PCGS's site to see if they indicated it's chop marked:

No. The PCGS listing doesn't indicate that the damage is a chop mark. PCGS problem coin code "98" means "Damage", of a variety of types, but chop mark isn't one of the listed examples.

Why does it matter?

Because the Chinese stopped using chops as trade in silver, the great depression, and the emergence of Mao came to pass. Late 1920ish. We struck the last silver dollars in 1935, China stopped in 1934.

By its existence, this piece was necessarily chopped no earlier than 1933.

So...is there any value, to chop collectors, or Chinese collectors, or both, to what could be one of the very last chopmarked coins?

And was I stupid for making an offer to NEN for a piece that looked like it was chopped, but was potentially missing the all-important PCGS seal of chopmarkiness approval--especially given this chop isn't an easily recognizable Chinese kanji?

It arrived a few moments ago...

Nah, busy and have not been looking at coins much. Had the fishing trip, then a business trip. Trying to soak in the last warmth before fuddernutter winter.
