whenever I get coins graded at PCGS, I use my CC. I do that for one reason: the instant PCGS charges the card (meaning grades are in), I get an email notice from my CC company. That means I can go online and check what they did. Not so much is my interest in the grade, but did they get everything else right (for my Registry Set)

Got that email this morning and checked it out. I had sent in an 1830 half dime and asked for grading and attribution. I expected MS64 and LM-9.2. The grade was right, but they attributed it as LM-9.1. UGH! I quickly called PCGS customer service, talked to Amanda and explained the issue. She said she would put a "ship hold" on the order and get it back into the grading room for reevaluation. I volunteered that I likely knew enough about attributing these things that if there were any questions, I would be glad to help out (is there a better way to say, "I am THE expert when it comes to attribution" and you are not?).

Anyway, a few hours later, Amanda calls me back and said it was taken care of and attributed the way I said it should be (LM-9.2) and they will ship it out today.

Could have been messy, please with the way it got fixed.

That looks like a wicked strike.

Too bad it isn't a dime.

There is no Social Security cushion for coins.

Seriously. That's a knockout. Tiny little scuff in the obverse right side field?

When a coin looks to be a much higher grade than the assigned grade, there are usually hairlines that aren't visible in the pics. PCGS hates hairlines.

it's a luster thing with this coin. Luster just doesn't merit 65, IMO.

That's racist. PCGS should stop slabbing white coins.

At least with it being MS and such a low denomination you can be pretty sure it wasn't involved in the purchase of a slave. I hear all larger denominations, even collector coins, are being destroyed because they are suddenly offensive.

that would be a sweet provenance, "this coin was used in payment for the purchase of Dred Scott. Scott later sued for his freedom (unsuccessfully) because the SCOTUS deemed, among other findings, that emancipation would improperly deprive Scott's owner of his legal property." Note that lot 527 is Scott's slave badge, in extra fine condition.

It might have bought a whip. A cheap one anyhow.

I bet when that baby was struck, the halls of the mint resounded with a mighty "plink."
