lost my internet connection and land line.

phone company wanted me to disconnect the house at the box and run a test before they send someone out.

as it turns out, this is the first view i've had into this box. a real rats nest. three drops in all, only one operational. seven wire pairs going into the house.

when i disconnect them all, the tests run clean. so they just saved me a hassle of having a serviceman come out only to find it's my house wiring. that would have been costly as i can deal with this myself.

so i've got resistance in one of these lines. what a mess.

i gots to get my voltmeter, disconnect my phone and DSL modem, then look for resistance. If I find resistance with everything otherwise unplugged, that house wire is bad.

I really only need two lines; the one to the phone and the one to the modem. Hopefully those two are good and I can simply hook those two back up and be done with it.

i found and eliminated the bad wire. the circuits that remain work now.

since both the phone and the wifi are wireless, it doesn't really matter much where the base stations are.

there are three tools required to work on phone lines.

1) A flat bladed screwdriver.
2) A voltmeter.
3) Teeth to strip the wire.

teeth are actually quite important. use of any bladed tool to strip the insulation can easily nick the copper, and a few bends later you have a broken wire.

i may have gotten the polarity wrong but i do not give a Elmo about that nor does any of my equipment.

my DSL speed is no faster than its rated speed. but on a 'clean' line is sure seems faster than it has been in a while.

this is my first look into the service box on my house. i've always thought that the folks that have wired and worked on this house over the decades are a collection of brainless idiots. i've been correcting what I can for a decade and a half.

more idiocy confirmation.

this is why i loathe to hire any local contractor in this area. i see what they do.
