Trek is 5 years old and bike dealer wanted to put his kid through Med School off my repairs.

"You are missing 4 gears...we can fix that for $40." fuddernutter it...who needs 21 gears.

"That seat is shot....$35 gets you a new one." Piss on that..the mummy type tape dissuades thieves.

Thanks for the link. Another year or so I will pick up a new Trek. About $450 out the door.

He wanted to upgrade your drive train. If there is nothing wrong with your existing drivetrain, then it is wise to decline that. If he does not replace enough parts when changing the cassette to one with more gears, the whole drivetrain is likely to work less well than it did before the change. And $40 is not enough parts...there are only a few drivetrain changes that would work well for $40.

As far as the seat goes, that may have been a good investment. it is your ass and prostate.

I think he was talking adjustment on the gears rather than parts.

I think I'll just buy a new bike when Mac pays Tumuss.

he wanted to adjust your bike for $40? well that makes more sense.

if you can't get to four of your seven gears in the back, that's pretty lousy.

The control cable stretches over time and requires this sort of adjustment. There's only one or two things to turn, but you really sort of need to do it on a stand whilst pedalling and watching the mechanism. I do this periodically to my own bikes.

dont be so cheap. support your local bike shop.

M Trek has started going, "tick..sshhhnkk..tick...FFshh...snick...tap....Fwee" on occasion.

What should I do? It's only in 6th gear so I can ride in 5 or 7 and it goes, "psssssshhhhhhhh."
which is what I expect.

I wish Russ could help.

This is my 5th or 6th bike from them since 2002. Gears should be comped. Seat too, and tires.

so, when you buy a car, you expect free lifetime tires, free lifetime maintenance, etc?

and you buy a new bike when it goes out of adjustment, I take it. Because a bike will last longer than that.

i'm just going to pick at you until i am satisfied.

as an engineer i like to do my own stuff.

i believe i have spent, maybe, $8000 in tooling and parts to make four bikes. One steel mountain bike, hardtail with the fattest tires I can get onto it. One steel road bike, as light as possible still being steel. One commuter bike, designed for a heavy load with tires that cannot be flattened. One all purpose bike that I took up to the vacation home so that I don't have to haul a damn bike around.

and I can maintain this stuff well. it's actually a little tricky. if you do it wrong, it can be dangerous. for example, if you don't set the brake shoes correctly, it'll be noisy, grabby and you might even do an end-over flip if the front is too grabby. Weaving my own wheels took a long time to learn. Did a few poor ones at first. But now, they are bullet proof and far better than the robot built wheels you get today. It's very fussy work. Good only for folks that are rich and have lots of time on their hands.

A unicycle saves money on tires.
