Is it generally worth the effort/expense to try to get a dog that doesn't like another dog to reconsider? A large dog intro'd to 2 smaller dogs ended up disliking one of the smaller dogs. Any likelihood of reconciliation?

You are the alpha, not him/her, and he/she needs to be taught that no dog is above another in the "pack"

The smaller dog should eat first etc. Call it favouring the smaller dog until the larger gets the hint.

Every time the large dogs beats up on the smaller, throw him/her onto their back and show your dominance and spoil the smaller

The larger will soon have a WTF moment if you shun somewhat

I've been down this road and followed advice from my vet and a trainer.

The third time the big dog ripped up the little one was the worst and final time, AND I got bit saving the little one's life. It's skin
was ripped about 8 inches like a surgical slice across it's side. Hundreds of dollars, stitches, a drain, an infection, and lots of drugs.... (the dog, not me).

I felt I was negligent for taking the risk this far and the big dog was OUT. Fortunately I found a good home for it on my own.

I have seen one instance where this worked out. Two big female GSDs - owners paid 5k each for them to go to a month long training course. They still don't like each other, but they are no longer eating each other...so far.

That being said...we have a code for these dogs when they come in - BDLD (Big Dog Little Dog) which usually involves the little dog with lacerations through the neck. It's not a matter of if...but when.

Best you can do is keep triggers to a minimum (feed them away from each other) and try to restrict interactions. If they start fighting - break it up at your own risk because thats normally when we see the big dog turn on owner.

Edited to add - typically it's females...not always. But I tell people to try to limit multiple female households unless they grew up together
