This is the "can" on my patio ceiling.

I want to hang a ceiling fan. These houses are built of foam and you can't do much "work" with the surfaces or it will just pop out or fuddernutter up smoehow.

I bought a fan and (according to Lowes) the necessary CAN adapter...
BZZZTTTT.... wrong.

Most cans are straight sided and this booger is flimsy and as you can see.....tapered.

Any ideas? Or is this a rip out a section, do it right, and hang a fan?

It's not worth a whole lot of expense as I just want it to circulate air for the bonsai during freezes.

:?: :?: :?: :?:

You really think that some adapter will let you hang a fan on that lol

Fans need solid support. Take the can out and see whats above it. You need something solid like a 2x4. They make several fan mount kits, new/old construction, but you cant buy one til you see whats above the can.

Other option is to buy a wall mount one like https://www.lowes.com/pd/allen-roth-18-in-3-Speed-Oscillation-Fan/50109246 but still need something solid to drill it into

Here's how I'd do it:

1) Call my contractor.

2) Point to the location; say "put a fan there".

3) Go watch TV.

If you're like me, and even hate plugging stuff into outlets, you need an eeeelektrishin. They make the least mess, and are the brightest of all subs.

fan boxes must be attached to structural wood. You'll have to remove the can and get in there to see where the nearest 2x4 is. You may have to add a board or two. It is unlikely that a can was built with the sort of support a fan needs.

also, keep in mind that an improperly installed fan can kill something it falls onto. This is not necessarily a negative thing. Use this knowledge wisely.

Actually if that can was the USUAL straight sided kind, the adapter would have worked.

the adapter would have sent it all crashing to the floor.

get a stand fan. if cooling off is what you want, these are better than ceiling fans.

i've seen these. they are what i call an 'automatic'.

take out the bulb. (you have done that already)

turn the switch on.

press the little button in the center of the light socket. you may have to take your shoes off and climb a metal ladder in order to reach this button, which is way back, deep in the center of that light socket. press it hard, sometimes they are stubborn.

the fixture will automatically convert itself to a ceiling fan fixture.

to change it back, press the button twice.
