It's fairly well documented that as one ages one loses the ability to hear high pitches. I've watched shows with my kids where they play tones, and people raise their hands if they hear them. My kids raise their hands when I've heard nothing. I always figured they're just messing with me.

Recently while listening to the newly remastered Sgt Pepper that I wrote about earlier, I was wondering about the coda to A Day in the Life. On the original recording, after the song has ended, a 15 KHz tone plays (according to Lennon, this is for dogs), and then some jibberish in the runout groove. On the remaster, I didn't hear the 15 KHz tone and was wondering why Giles Martin would take that out.

So I checked with my daughter -- and she can hear it fine. So basically, I'm deaf above 15 KHz, and probably not even that high. That's a bummer.

Most of what's posted on the OFR is greater than 15KHz.

I think I may have that. I don't hear most of what my wife says.
Must be the shrill voice.

Don't you miss the vocal stylings of Geddy Lee?

There isn't much music above 12Khz. Mostly harmonics of other fundamental notes.

Not the chord -- the 15 KHz tone that precedes the run-out groove jibberish.

If you can't hear it, ask your kids. And welcome to the old man hearing club.

I can still hear it on my original CD that was released in 1987. The tapes were supposed to have been remastered then. I just wish my eyesight was as good as it was thirty years ago.

I should dig out my CD and try it. I've been listening to the recently released remaster. The tone on the 1987 CD is probably a little "dirtier" and so maybe I can still hear it.

I also had the Parlaphone album and it was the same as on the '87 CD and not at all the same as the first Parlaphone pressing from 1967,

It seems people have selective memory when it comes to vinyl with the recent resurgence. Having suffered through vinyl until 1986 the 1987 CD releases revealed noises I never heard on vinyl and I never looked back. Not having any original pressings I still hung on to the Parlaphone albums until I could get something for them shortly before I came here. I still have all the 1987 CDs that I saved in both FLAC and MP3 and they still sound good to me so I won't be buying anything else that has been remastered.
