It rains too much on the Hilo side. Went to the green sand beach today. Put the rental Jeep into 4H 4WD to get there over some very gnarly trails. I'm fairly certain that I was outside the bounds of the agreement that I signed.

Pic of a turtle trying to take a nap on the sand at the black sand beach (You can see his trail from the ocean in the sand) and one of me and Mrs. V at the green sand beach.

Ill stick with USVI - mainly St. John. 1/100 the people, half the costs, and better snorkeling - not much in the way of hiking though. I'm content with staying in the water. I guess for hiking HI would be pretty but other than that hard pass.

It looks much more green in person. Really, a remarkable place.

vargha: did you make the three mile trek, or did you pay the locals for a ride? We walked there, and it was a bit brutal, so we paid $50 for a ride back.

No, I paid $20 extra per day for a Jeep Wrangler Sport 4WD and like the crazed fool that I am, made the trek myself.

Wow. That's a heckuva drive.

doesn't look like a bad or difficult drive to me.

you'll want to wash your rental.

Wash is definitely on the docket today. As to the video - I wish it were still like that in September 2017. Even the guide book described the ride as "flat grass". It was until everyone decided to go there, I guess. Now there are huge rutted trails, and many alternate trails that have been made and are now rutted. High-ending and tipping the vehicle are now genuine concerns. It was definitely an adrenaline rush in a rental vehicle, and the Jeep came through.

i find 'braided' roads like that to be fairly humorous.

i bet you went driving through the grass at least once.

i gotta dig out the video I have of this road. Bobby's Hole.

This is considered 'excellent condition'. The county just maintained it. As good as it gets. When it's bad, the inside rut is up to six feet deep.

My passenger was freaking out. As I recall, the truck didn't even slip a tire. not much anyway. First gear low and GO do NOT stop.
