comrade v, September is one of the hotter months, but the water is fine.

Each Island has its own personality so its a tough call. If you've never been to Hawaii go to Oahu. Lots to see...from pineapples to Pearl Harbor and Waimea to Why-don-I-liv-hea...

Many good ideas have already been submitted, I suggest that as soon as you decide on which Island, book your rental car. If you want a SUV or mini-van they go fast. Airbnb seems the way to go if you're not going to stay on Waikiki. A night or two on Waikiki is a must though if you've never been; classic scenes and vibes, great restaurants and easy surf, drinks with umbrellas too.

I lived in Kaneohe from 9 months to 4 years old. I remember picking up cowrie shells on the beach at Waikiki. I also remember my dad knocking down Kukui nuts from a tree in a nearby park. We had a huge cage on our back porch where my dad kept finches.

Looks like it will be surf's plan. Flying in and out of Kona and using one-way tickets on two different airlines was the cheapest way to do a reasonable one-stop flight (too cheap to pay non-stop). Flights are booked to start the week after Labor Day.

Leaving tomorrow early AM. Flying in and out of Kona. 3 days on the Hilo side and 3 days on the Kona side. Crap loads of stuff packed into that time.
