What's the preferred way to find a program, etc. that could be hidden on your hard drive? A few times in the last day or so it seems that something starts to run and sucks up all resources to the point you can't do anything. The HD glows solid yellow and it's just about impossible to navigate between web pages, etc. When you can finally access it, task manager doesn't show anything unusual happening. After a few minutes it just sorta stops. I assume it's internet initiated. I can access task manager, resource monitor, event log, but if they caught anything I have no idea where to look. Ran AV and Malwarebytes, but nothing found.

I had an issue some time back with a pest called javaws.exe*32 but managed to get rid of that by uninstalling and reinstalling Java.

Any clues for what to look for?

Task Manager should show you everything that is running. From there you can see what is using the most CPU and memory, and see if you can kill them.

Probably a stupid thought, but is it possible that it's updating?

Possible, but not probable. There's usually a message to choose updates to install and I don't think anything was scheduled to auto update at those times.

Memory was so bogged down that it was difficult to access TM, yet it didn't show anything using excessive amounts of RAM. Right now it shows that FF and Chrome are using well over 650K each of memory and there doesn't seem to be any problem accessing websites, etc. I don't recall many/any past situations where something running [or a firewall breach] made the computer so sluggish.
