I have a computer similar to this one running win7 home premium. For some reason it doesn't want to do updates. The last one was 06/12/16. The one I'm posting from now updates ok. When I do the check for updates on the other one it just sits there and never does anything. I tried an optional update, but after half an hour it hadn't downloaded a thing. I know there are updates available because they've been installed on this computer.

Also Windows Defender doesn't seem to want to update either. It makes a few percent progress then just stalls out. FWIW, the Win 10 update KB3035583 on the other computer is hidden.

Any suggestions. Windows is set to update automatically.

Thanks for the tip. Looks like a tough error to fix.

I'm assuming that didn't work.

Have you tried doing a system restore to a date prior to 6/12/16?

Yes, but I had to do it from a system image on backup 03/29/16 and it didn't work. Is system restore the same as restoring files from a backup?

System Restore generally reverts changed settings, rolls back drivers, and uninstalls any Windows Updates that have installed. Try it out if you haven't already.

* From the Start menu, type: Restore in the Search programs and files dialog box.
* From the list of results, click System Restore.
* In the System Restore window, click Next.
* From the list of restore points, select the Date and Time you wish to restore from. Click Next and then click Finish.

I used system restore, but the only option prior to 06/12 was from the backup. In other words, there wasn't a valid SR restore point prior to 06/12.

I have a Buffalo external hard drive that I use to back up the computer using windows backup. There is a system image on it from 03/29/16. That was the closest restore point to 06/12 that was available. It didn't work with SR. Would it help if I went to direct to restore from backup or are they both the same thing?

Did you shut down any antivirus/firewall software that was running? Perhaps something changed and the Microsoft update servers got blacklisted somehow.

No. I use Avast AV and Malwarebytes. Windows Defender won't update either.

Perhaps Windows Defender is the issue. It has a built in firewall. You don't really need it if you use Avast and Malwarebytes anyway.

* Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clickingWindows Firewall.
* Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. ...
* Click off, and then click OK.

I'm thinking a replacement is in the cards. It's been more of a backup and I've had issues with it in the past.

Tried a system restore again with no better luck. Did some cleanup thru Avast and upon restart it just hung up on the starting windows thing. It won't power up enough to power the mouse or keyboard so I think it's fuct.
