but.... will an external hard drive hold just what you put in it
or
does it take over the function of the computer hard drive automatically?

OR.... is it an either/or with how you set it up?

I...think.... I want one.

but don't wanna go from thinking about losing data from ONE of em going flooey and still losing my importatant whistle: stuff.

You can set it up either way.

Most typically, an external drive is just a place to plop a few external files.

One does not typically put an operating system, etc onto an external drive. But it can be done and sometimes is useful.

In no case do they 'automatically' take over the function of the internal drive. Your internal drive has the operating system, applications and other stuff on it and adding an external drive to your system does not automatically change this.

If you don't want to lose stuff, back it up. If you really don't want to lose stuff, back it up to multiple locations.

Having an external hard drive does not prevent you from losing stuff. Having backup copies of your Elmo helps prevent you from losing stuff.

What about smoe "mirror" thingy I saw advertised from Fry's?
The text of the ad implied it copied the entire computer. Program files and all.
Or that's how I read it.

Went to examine and they were out anyway.

But??????

There are very few instances where it is necessary to mirror your home computer. Back-up would be sufficient in the vast majority of cases.

That's what I thought, too. The mirror thingy was 75 bucks and it just seemed cheap.
:?:

"seventy five dollar mirror thingy" is probably not a real 'mirror' anyway, but simply an external hard drive with backup software and a brand name with the word 'mirror' in it. and probably cloud.
